June 2024 Newsletter

It Happened in June

DADVICE GOING WEEKLY - or, the announcement happened in June so I’m totally counting that. Chances are you already knew about this, since I’m sure all my newsletter subscribers came from that announcement post. Hello! I’m very excited about this, I’ve been thinking about it for three months or so and figured I might as well just do it. There’s no better time than now, I suppose!

DEATH OF PATREON - okay, here’s the thing, I’ve tried to make Patreon work on and off since 2016 and it’s just not fun, you guys. Even when I had a handful of subscribers it wasn’t fun. I think we can all agree the subscription market is oversaturated by now and I will not add to that bloat if I can help it. There’ll be other ways to support me financially, should you choose to, and in the meantime you can read Organising Your Files When You Have 70+ Projects which I recently liberated from behind the paywall.

NEW NEWSLETTER - Hello, you are in it! Originally I wanted to use Patreons free tier as an alternative to traditional newsletters, but that didn’t work out at all so I recently made the switch to beehiiv. It’s a new relationship, I hope it works out, so far it looks… nice. We shall see. I also think you can reply to this newsletter and I get your reply in my email inbox??

FILTHY FIGMENTS FUNDRAISER - Okay this is a little awkward to talk about for several reasons. First being that the fundraiser ended yesterday and it did really well! Second is that I dooon’t knooow if most of you know what I do for a living? So, uh… I’ve been drawing ADULT COMICS since 2016 and by adult I mean there are butts and punisess and all kinds of stuff in there. There won’t be any of that in this newsletter, but I might drop a mention if I have a new comic out or we’re doing a print kickstarter. This will never turn into a varguba weekly, you have my word.

BALDUR’S GATE TABLETOP - This is not work but I just want to talk about how I’m DM’ing Baldur’s Gate 3 as a in person DnD campaign for my friends and it’s maybe the most over the top thing I’ve done to date? Here’s our battle map for the first goblin raid outside the Emerald Grove.

Red for enemies, gray for allies. Goblin Booyagh got a flower hat.

Plans for July

Dadvice - like, so much. So much Dadvice. I will eat, sleep and breathe this comic for probably the whole month, with a few freelance exceptions that I can’t hold off.

My ambition is as always to get started on other comics so I can 1) make more comics and 2) have something in my online store to sell but all that will happen when it happens. There is no shortage of ideas, only a shortage of time.

I haven’t recommended any comics here yet which is absolutely bananas, since that’s literally all I think about. Today I want to push Whale Star: The Gyeongseyong Mermaid over on Webtoons. It’s a retelling of The Little Mermaid set in 1920’s Korea — heartbreaking historical drama, beautifully presented with complex characters. It does contain some harrowing scenes of violence and suicide, so if you’re sensitive to those topics this may not be the best choice.

Since most of you weren’t around for the Patreon Newsletter attempt, here’s a round-up of my previous recommendations. Do you want me to make a permanent list of these somewhere? What kind of stuff do you want me to recommend next?
